Whew, it's been three years. Is it time for an update? It'll be short, as I don't have much to really report.
I don't even know what's new on this website, who still uses it, or where to begin, but, well, here goes.
After graduating I worked at the place I had an internship with for a year.
I then took a year to work for The Literacy Lab as a K-3 Reading tutor, embedded in one of the Elementary schools in my community. It was incredibly eye-opening for me, as a person who went through all my schooling at programs tailored for the gifted and talented. Having to witness first-hand some of the disparities that some of these kids had to go through with a fresh perspective--I already reverenced teachers growing up and now, seeing the bulk of what they have to go through first-hand, I have even more respect for them than I already did.
Throughout the year, however, the call for doing something more creative kept resonating within me, and I decided to part ways with The Literacy Lab, though I still keep in contact and visit the school from time to time, checking in on the kids I had on my caseload when I worked there. One of them will be leaving to go to 6th grade soon. I hope they're doing alright.
Following the call to do something more creative with my livelihood lead me to my current occupation; one that I have been wanting since I first graduated college; a job in my field. I now work at a university as the Graphic Design Specialist. I started January 2018. I love what I do here, and being able to work for an HBCU is an extra added treat. Knowing the work I do contributes to the well being of students within this HBCUs constituency fuels me in times of hardship. I love what I do. And though I have little time to partake in my hobbies of making simfiles and doing other art, and though I find times to complain through all the BS I must endure, I am overall filled with a sense of gratitude when reflecting back on all of it because I finally get to have a taste of what I've been working towards throughout all my later schooling. It's a wonderful feeling.
